Bechtel Finishes $3.5B Sydney Airport Early

Bechtel has completed the $3.5 billion Western Sydney International Airport project nearly seven months ahead of schedule, marking a major infrastructure milestone for Australia. According to a June 26 release from the firm, the megaproject is the country’s first international, greenfield airport development in more than 50 years.

Bechtel, headquartered in Reston, Virginia, managed the project’s design and construction since 2018. The firm coordinated contractors across a broad scope of work including the terminal, runway, technology systems, roadways, bridges, car parks, utilities, and connections to Sydney’s Metro system and M12 motorway.

“This project epitomizes the schedule and budget benefits that come with a fit-for-purpose delivery model with clear roles and accountability,” said Darren Mort, president of Bechtel’s infrastructure business.

The completed terminal spans 82,000 square meters (over 882,000 square feet), while the runway stretches 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles). Additional infrastructure includes internal roads and intermodal connections, all delivered under Bechtel’s management.

According to Sydney-based construction software provider Mastt, a “fit for purpose” model ensures a structure meets its operational intent while promoting clarity, accountability, and reduced conflict—benefits Bechtel credits for the project’s early delivery.

Though major construction is complete, Bechtel is still preparing the facility for operations, with the operational readiness and airport transfer (ORAT) program scheduled to begin later this year. The airport is on track to open in 2026 and is expected to accommodate up to 10 million passengers in its first year.

The Western Sydney International Airport represents a transformative infrastructure investment for the region, unlocking economic growth and relieving congestion from Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport. Strategically located in the city’s western corridor, the facility is designed to serve as a new gateway for international travelers, while supporting freight and logistics industries across New South Wales.

Once operational, the airport is expected to become a catalyst for employment and regional development. Surrounding business parks and transport infrastructure are being planned in tandem with the airport’s launch, aligning with Australia’s broader vision for a more decentralized and resilient urban economy.

Bechtel’s early delivery also underscores the growing global appeal of performance-driven project models. As governments seek to streamline large-scale public works, the Western Sydney Airport may serve as a benchmark for future infrastructure programs in both Australia and beyond.
