DPR Apprenticeship Graduates Apply Skills on Real-World Projects
DPR's Craft Apprenticeship Program graduates are putting their hands-on skills to work in the field, making a significant impact on DPR projects across the country. Alex Caranza, a graduate of the program, now works at a job site in Orlando, FL, where he’s able to visualize 3D structures and translate blueprints into reality. This new skill is something Caranza developed through the program, which aims to address the skilled labor shortage and provide employees with the expertise needed to build for the future.
Certified by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), the apprenticeship program offers valuable training from experienced DPR builders. Participants are taught essential construction techniques, including blueprint reading, math, and communication, before diving into trade-specific paths such as concrete, drywall, or electrical. Graduates then apply their knowledge directly on DPR project sites.
Caranza credits the program with enhancing his ability to read floor plans and schedules. "What really helped me most was learning how to read blueprints. I can now read what a floor plan is, along with hardware schedules and door schedules," he says, noting that this skill has had a significant impact on his career. “Everything I learned just progresses me more.”
Jose Hernandez, another program graduate, works as a field tech and leadperson at the Baylor Scott and White Medical Center project in Austin, TX. His responsibilities include quality control checks on interior and exterior walls and using the Dusty Robotics layout robot. Hernandez feels that the apprenticeship gave him the confidence to expand his skill set. "I’m grateful to have been a part of the apprenticeship program because it’s helped me continue to enhance my skill set and drive. All I can say is, ‘keep it coming,’" he shares.
The program is not only about technical skills but also about fostering a strong cultural understanding. Hernandez highlights how the program introduced him to DPR's core value of "Ever Forward." "I work on the technology side now and can see the impact technology makes when we go out and look at the next big thing to make our work safer and more efficient," he explains.
Hector Garcia, a graduate from the Charlotte, NC area, adds that the program helped expand his understanding of project operations, ultimately aiding in the safe and timely completion of projects.
By blending technical expertise with soft skills, DPR's apprenticeship program prepares graduates with portable NCCER credentials that are recognized nationwide, along with the confidence to thrive in the industry.
