High-Speed Rail on Track: Construction Begins on New Virginia-North Carolina Line

RaleiRaleigh, NC:  Construction is officially underway on a new intercity passenger rail line connecting Raleigh, North Carolina, and Richmond, Virginia. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg joined North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and other dignitaries last week for the groundbreaking ceremony.

This long-awaited project utilizes an existing freight rail corridor, with Virginia having already purchased its section in 2020. North Carolina is finalizing the acquisition of its portion, known as the S-Line. While an official start date for passenger service is yet to be announced, the completed line promises significant travel time reductions between the two cities.

Faster Connections, Greener Travel

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) anticipates sections of the route reaching speeds of up to 110 mph, potentially cutting travel time by more than an hour. This enhanced connectivity aligns with the growing popularity of passenger rail in the region.

"The roads are just as congested as they were before the pandemic," said Mike McLaughlin, Chief Operating Officer of the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA). He emphasized the convenience of trains, allowing passengers to work, relax, or enjoy refreshments onboard compared to the limitations of car travel.

The project also prioritizes sustainability. Virginia's agreement with the freight rail company allows for higher speeds on dedicated passenger train sections. Additionally, the planned introduction of Amtrak's new Airo trains in 2026 promises faster, cleaner travel compared to older models. VPRA is also exploring opportunities to straighten sections of the route for further speed optimization without impacting nearby residents.

Funding the Future

The significant investment in the S-Line project is bolstered by a nearly $1.1 billion federal grant awarded to the NCDOT. Amtrak and the NCDOT will contribute an additional 20% in matching funds, demonstrating a multi-party commitment to this crucial infrastructure development.

This project signifies a major step forward in connecting North Carolina and Virginia through a faster, more convenient, and environmentally friendly transportation option.
