Indiana’s New Home Construction Permits Rise 7% in January

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana’s homebuilding industry has started 2025 strong, with a noticeable increase in single-family home building permits. According to the Indiana Builders Association (IBA), 1,353 single-family permits were issued statewide in January, marking a 7% increase compared to the 1,269 permits pulled in January 2024. Additionally, the number represents an 11% rise from the 1,216 permits issued in December of 2024.

Ryan Baker, president of the IBA, commented, "The steady increase in permits is a strong indicator of Indiana’s healthy housing market. With demand for new construction remaining high, we’re optimistic about continued growth in 2025."

This increase reflects a broader trend of strong housing market demand across the state, with significant growth in both new builds and the overall construction sector. The rise in permits, especially when compared to previous months, signals that builders are confident in the continued demand for new homes.

Factors Driving the Growth

Several factors are contributing to the ongoing demand for new homes in Indiana. The state’s relatively low cost of living, competitive property taxes, and an expanding workforce are driving both in-state buyers and people relocating from out of state.

With continued low mortgage rates and more people looking to build custom homes, builders are moving forward with projects to meet the needs of a growing population. Baker emphasized the importance of understanding these trends and capitalizing on opportunities that arise.

"We’re seeing a demand for homes that’s not just a passing trend," he added. "Indiana offers great opportunities for homebuyers, and that’s driving the increased number of building permits. The market is evolving to meet those needs."

Looking Ahead to 2025

As the year progresses, builders are staying ahead of this trend by planning new developments, especially in growing suburban areas. However, they are also facing challenges such as rising material costs and labor shortages that could impact the pace of construction moving forward. Still, with a solid start to the year and a stable outlook for the housing market, Indiana’s home construction industry is positioned for further growth.

Baker concluded, “We are optimistic that 2025 will continue to bring steady growth in the housing sector. The rise in building permits is a great sign, and we expect this trend to continue, with builders working hard to meet the growing needs of Indiana’s communities.”
