Construction is officially underway on the long-anticipated expansion of the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Boulder City. Drivers passing the intersection of Buchanan Boulevard and Boulder City Parkway may have noticed fencing and construction activity marking the start of this significant project, which began in early December.
“We’re excited to see this project underway after so many years, but know there is still hard work ahead of us to reach the finish line and provide that high-quality educational and cultural experience for all who will walk through the doors that the people of Nevada expect from their state museums,” said Museum Director Christopher MacMahon.
The new facility will offer expanded exhibits, classroom space, archival storage, and a research room, further supporting the museum’s mission of education and preservation. However, while the building is funded and construction is in progress, additional resources are needed to operate the expanded facility.

MacMahon explained that they are still awaiting approval for the hiring of necessary staff, including a curator, museum attendants, and custodial workers. “We are optimistic the state Legislature will fund these positions in their upcoming session,” he said.
Construction is expected to take approximately 15 months, with an estimated completion date in March or April 2026. The grand opening will be announced once the facility is ready for occupancy and staffing needs are met.
The expanded museum is projected to boost tourism and local business in Boulder City. “The Nevada State Railroad Museum is one of the main destinations for both locals and tourists visiting Boulder City, and when people visit the museum, data shows museum-goers stay longer in town, patronizing local businesses and restaurants,” MacMahon noted.

With the visitor center expected to double annual attendance, the museum anticipates generating $1 million to $3 million annually in additional spending at local businesses. “Our success will also be the success of small business owners around town, and of course more money spent at local businesses also means more revenue collected by the city that can be utilized on city services on behalf of Boulder City’s residents,” he added.
Beyond economic benefits, the expanded facility will strengthen the museum’s role as an academic and cultural center in the community. “The museum is excited for the future ahead and looks forward to continuing to work with our wonderful community partners here in Boulder City and proudly serving the people of Nevada as one of your seven state museums,” MacMahon said.
As construction progresses, the Nevada State Railroad Museum looks forward to becoming an even more prominent educational and cultural destination for both locals and visitors.
