The City of Leawood has officially begun the highly anticipated Tomahawk Creek Parkway project, aimed at improving both the functionality and safety of the Tomahawk Creek Parkway corridor. The project, which will continue through the end of 2025, will address long-standing roadway issues and provide much-needed improvements to enhance traffic flow, pedestrian and cyclist experiences, and overall safety. City officials have emphasized the focus on sustainability and ensuring the changes support the growing needs of the community.

"This transformative project will improve transportation and provide a more sustainable, safer environment for everyone in the area," said the City of Leawood's spokesperson. "The project is designed to tackle flooding risks, improve traffic efficiency, and enhance pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure in line with Leawood's long-term goals for sustainable urban development."
As the project progresses, construction is expected to impact various areas around the corridor, with some significant closures already taking effect. The multi-use trail along the creek, running from College Boulevard to 119th Street, is expected to close for about eight weeks in February. Pedestrians are being redirected to the opposite sidewalk during this time. Additionally, Tomahawk Creek Parkway itself will experience closures at Town Center Drive for the construction of a roundabout, which is expected to last for several months.
Local commuters can expect to see further disruptions, with Tomahawk Creek Parkway reduced to one lane in each direction from College Boulevard to 115th Street, and a speed limit reduction to 25 mph for safety during construction. These closures are anticipated to last until October, after the roundabout construction is completed.
The first phase of the Tomahawk Creek Parkway project also includes significant environmental and aesthetic upgrades. The city is raising portions of the roadway to mitigate flooding risks, re-paving existing roadways, and installing new bike lanes for improved cyclist access. Pedestrian infrastructure will also see significant enhancements, with new sidewalk and trail connections that integrate with the existing Tomahawk Creek trail system. The installation of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons at key pedestrian crossings will further enhance safety for residents and commuters.
The project will also address flooding issues with excavation and grading along Tomahawk Creek. In addition to improving transportation, the initiative will introduce street tree planting to improve the visual appeal of the area and support Leawood's environmental goals. Finally, the installation of fiber optic conduit will modernize infrastructure and support future digital needs.
As the project progresses through each phase, city officials urge local residents to stay informed about road closures, construction updates, and other changes that may impact travel in the area. The city remains committed to ensuring minimal disruption while working towards a more efficient, sustainable, and safer Tomahawk Creek Parkway corridor.
