A 68,000-square-foot early childhood campus in Texas City, Texas, has received industry recognition for its construction and project execution. Bartlett Cocke General Contractors’ Houston team earned a Gold award in the K-12 New Construction category at the 2026 AGC Houston APEX Awards for the Texas City ISD Calvin Vincent Early Childhood Center.
The award recognizes construction quality and project execution on a school designed around the needs of young students. The project involved Texas City ISD, Huckabee and Bartlett Cocke, along with multiple trade partners.
The Calvin Vincent Early Childhood Center was developed with 21 themed classrooms serving three- and four-year-old students. The learning environments incorporate themes connected to the ocean, zoo, wetlands and the petrochemical industry that is significant to the Texas Gulf Coast region.
The specialized classroom environments required construction teams to coordinate a range of custom elements beyond standard classroom finishes. Millwork, environmental graphics and specialty finishes were incorporated into the project and required planning around fabrication, installation and sequencing.
The project team addressed those requirements during earlier phases of construction rather than leaving specialized components to the final stages of the build.
The center was completed in July 2025, keeping the project on schedule ahead of the school year. Meeting the completion target required coordination among the school district, design team, general contractor and trade partners.
The project also illustrates the scheduling demands associated with K-12 construction, where completion dates are often tied directly to academic calendars. Specialized interiors and educational environments must be delivered alongside the broader building program without affecting the opening schedule.
The AGC Houston APEX Awards recognize construction projects and industry contributions across the Houston market. Bartlett Cocke’s Gold award places the Calvin Vincent Early Childhood Center among the recognized K-12 new construction projects in the 2026 awards program.
For owners planning education facilities, the project highlights the importance of early coordination for customized learning environments. Specialized finishes and classroom features can affect procurement, fabrication and installation schedules, making early trade coordination an important consideration for projects with fixed occupancy deadlines.
The award underscores how detailed preconstruction coordination can support delivery of specialized educational facilities while maintaining schedule requirements. For school districts and construction teams, projects such as the Calvin Vincent Early Childhood Center demonstrate the need to integrate design-specific features, trade work and academic-calendar deadlines into the construction plan.
