Thirteen new apprentices are beginning skilled-trades careers with Bassett Mechanical as part of a record-setting intake by UA Local 400. The union’s 2026 Apprentice Signing Day, held in October, marked the addition of 138 apprentices to its training program, the largest class in the organization’s history.
The new apprentices will follow a training pathway that combines practical work experience with classroom instruction and guidance from experienced tradespeople. The program is designed to help participants build technical skills while earning a paycheck and developing the capabilities required for long-term careers.
Bassett Mechanical’s 13 apprentices will work alongside experienced employees and gain exposure to projects involving mechanical construction, industrial refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing and maintenance services.
Apprenticeship programs provide an entry point into skilled trades while helping employers develop workers with practical knowledge and job-site experience. Structured instruction and mentorship also give participants opportunities to improve their craftsmanship, understand workplace safety requirements and prepare for greater responsibilities.
The large 2026 intake highlights the role of organized apprenticeship training in bringing new workers into the mechanical trades. As contractors deliver projects across multiple technical specialties, developing and retaining qualified workers remains important to maintaining workforce capacity.
Bassett Mechanical’s participation builds on its partnership with UA Local 400, which supports training for careers in plumbing, pipefitting and HVAC. The collaboration connects apprentices with structured education and practical experience in the mechanical industry.
For the new recruits, signing day marks the beginning of a career development process rather than simply a job placement. Continued learning, mentorship and exposure to different types of work will help them build experience and pursue advancement within the trades.
The record 138-person apprentice class gives UA Local 400 a larger group of new entrants to develop for the industry. Bassett Mechanical’s participation adds 13 trainees to its own workforce development pipeline.
For mechanical contractors, apprenticeship programs can help create a more reliable source of skilled labour while passing technical knowledge from experienced workers to the next generation. The success of these programs depends on sustained training, safe working environments and opportunities for apprentices to apply their skills on real projects.
