Electrical infrastructure upgrades are a critical component of the Raritan River Bridge Replacement Project, with E-J Electric providing transmission, traction power, bridge electrical and communications systems. The company's scope covers equipment and installations needed to support movable bridge operations and regional rail service.
The work spans multiple bridge construction stages and requires careful outage coordination, systems integration and testing to ensure reliable operation across the new infrastructure.
E-J Electric's scope includes installation and delivery of 138-kilovolt transmission equipment and associated high-voltage hardware, along with overhead catenary systems, rigid conductor rail, aerial feeders, signal power and return conductors.
The traction and distribution work also includes 4,160-volt utility feeds and interlocking lighting. These systems form part of the electrical infrastructure supporting rail operations through the bridge corridor.
Coordinating installation across multiple construction stages and planned power outages is central to the work. The sequencing must account for the technical requirements of the electrical systems while supporting the broader bridge replacement effort.
The company is also furnishing and installing electrical systems for the movable bridge, including lift-span drive motors, motor control centers, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) controls, navigation and signal lighting, machinery house power and walkway illumination.
These systems support the operation and monitoring of the movable span, where mechanical and electrical equipment must function together reliably.
E-J Electric's communications scope includes closed-circuit television cameras, fiber-optic backbone infrastructure, network terminations and integration with NJ TRANSIT's Microwave Hut. The installations provide communications infrastructure associated with the bridge and its operating systems.
The project illustrates the range of specialized electrical and communications work involved in replacing a movable rail bridge. High-voltage transmission, traction power, signaling, mechanical controls and communications systems must be coordinated with the structural construction sequence and rail operating requirements.
For infrastructure owners and contractors, early planning for outages, staged installation and system integration is essential to managing complex rail projects. Coordinated delivery of these systems helps establish the electrical and communications capabilities required for dependable bridge and railway operations.
