Airfield safety infrastructure will be upgraded at Homestead Air Reserve Base under an approximately $11 million contract awarded to Granite by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The project centres on installing an aircraft arresting system designed to help stop aircraft during emergency situations on the runway.
The award expands Granite’s federal construction work and brings together its Federal Division and Florida regional operations to deliver the project.
Granite’s scope includes constructing and installing the BAK-12/14 aircraft arresting system, which provides an emergency stopping mechanism for aircraft using the airfield. The work also includes runway striping to support airfield operations.
The project is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2027. The contract will be recorded in Granite’s third-quarter 2026 CAP.
Granite plans to use its federal construction expertise alongside the resources and local knowledge of its Florida team. The coordinated approach is intended to support project delivery while expanding the company’s ability to pursue additional federal opportunities across Florida and the Southeast.
The award also reflects ongoing investment in specialised aviation infrastructure, where construction work must accommodate operational safety requirements and coordination with federal project stakeholders.
The contract highlights opportunities for civil and specialty contractors in federal aviation infrastructure. Aircraft arresting systems and runway improvements require specialised installation capabilities and careful coordination within active airfield environments.
For construction owners and contractors, the project illustrates continued federal investment in airfield safety systems and the value of combining specialised expertise with regional delivery resources.
