The redevelopment of San Francisco International Airport’s Harvey Milk Terminal 1 has been named Engineering News-Record’s 2026 Northern California Project of the Year, recognising the scale and coordination involved in modernising a major airport facility.
Nevell Group, Inc. (NGi), a specialty contractor on the project, contributed design-assist, preconstruction and interior systems work alongside general contractor Hensel Phelps, Gensler, Kuth Ranieri Architects and the wider project team.
The terminal redevelopment involved upgrading facilities at one of the United States’ busiest airports, with improvements intended to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency.
Nevell Group’s scope included metal framing, plaster and specialty ceiling systems, supporting the terminal’s architectural requirements. Its design-assist and preconstruction involvement also contributed to project planning and coordination.
Maintaining airport operations during construction added complexity to the redevelopment. The project required phased construction, detailed planning and coordination among the project partners to carry out the work while the airport continued operating.
The recognition highlights the collective work of the project team, including Hensel Phelps, San Francisco International Airport, Gensler, Kuth Ranieri Architects and specialty contractors.
The award highlights the role of coordinated project delivery and specialty trade expertise in complex aviation infrastructure upgrades. For airport owners and construction teams, terminal redevelopment projects require careful sequencing, design coordination and construction methods that minimise disruption to ongoing operations.
