Survey to Examine MEP Business and Fabrication Trends

Industry research into business performance, fabrication practices and operational challenges is advancing through a new survey led by the John R. Gentille Foundation (JRGF) in partnership with Stratus. The initiative will inform the 2027 State of MEP Report, focusing on developments affecting mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) contractors.

The research builds on the previous survey, which attracted more than 140 MEP industry executives. Participants contributed perspectives on their businesses, fabrication operations and wider industry conditions.

The latest survey will gather additional information on how contractors are adapting to industry changes and identifying business opportunities. The results are intended to help MEP businesses assess their operations against broader industry trends.

Findings to Support Contractor Planning

The report will address issues relevant to MEP contractors as they evaluate business performance, fabrication capabilities and operational priorities. Survey responses will provide industry-level perspectives on the challenges and opportunities contractors are experiencing.

Participants will receive early access to the 2027 report, giving them an opportunity to review the findings before wider access.

The research also provides an avenue for industry executives to contribute operational insights that can inform a broader understanding of the MEP contracting sector.

Industry Collaboration and Technical Education

The survey initiative connects with wider industry efforts to share knowledge and improve contracting practices. The Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA), the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA) are scheduled to host the 2027 MEP Innovation Conference in Tampa, Florida, from Jan. 25-27.

The event will include educational sessions, technology demonstrations, peer learning and collaboration among different MEP trades.

Why It Matters to MEP Contractors

Reliable industry data can help mechanical, electrical and plumbing contractors evaluate business conditions, identify operational challenges and inform planning decisions. The 2027 State of MEP Report is intended to consolidate perspectives from industry executives, with fabrication operations and business performance among the areas covered. Its value will depend on the range of responses and the findings ultimately reported.
