Bridge maintenance crews will address non-structural damage to the Portage Lake Lift Bridge connecting Houghton and Hancock, Michigan, under a three-day repair schedule announced by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) on Oct. 12.
The damage resulted from high-load vehicle strikes. The planned work is intended to support the bridge’s continued safe and reliable operation. MDOT has not disclosed the repair cost or additional technical details about the damaged areas.
Repairs are scheduled from Monday, Oct. 19, through Wednesday, Oct. 21. Motorists should expect single-lane closures affecting northbound M-26/US-41 each day until approximately 3 p.m.
The restrictions may affect travel between the two communities during the work period. Drivers should allow additional time and follow posted traffic controls while crews carry out repairs.
The work addresses damage that can occur when vehicles carrying loads above permitted clearances strike bridge infrastructure. Although MDOT described the damage as non-structural, the repairs are intended to help maintain reliable operation of this transportation link.
The announcement did not specify whether further maintenance phases are planned after Oct. 21.
Routine repairs help transportation agencies maintain the safety and dependability of existing infrastructure while managing disruption to road users. For contractors and public-sector infrastructure owners, the project also illustrates how targeted maintenance work can require temporary traffic controls to protect crews and keep a bridge operating during repairs.
