Women’s participation in the skilled trades remains an important workforce development priority for construction employers and labour organisations. The Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA) joined industry representatives at the Tradeswomen Build Nations conference in Houston, Texas, to strengthen connections among contractors, labour groups and women working across the construction sector.
Held Oct. 9-11, the conference brought together thousands of tradeswomen and industry leaders. SMACNA’s delegation included executive leadership, representatives from its Labour Relations and Innovation departments, and members of its Women in Leadership Committee.
The organisation participated in the event’s Banner Parade, which recognised women’s contributions to the skilled trades. Incoming SMACNA President Scott Vidimos was among the participants.
The gathering provided an opportunity for contractors and labour representatives to exchange perspectives on workforce participation and workplace development. For construction employers, collaboration with trade organisations can help strengthen industry relationships and address the needs of a diverse skilled workforce.
SMACNA and the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART) are preparing a Women in the Trades Learning Journey. The planned initiative will include a joint discussion involving SMACNA’s Women in Leadership Committee and SMART’s International Women’s Committee.
The session is intended to facilitate the exchange of experiences and perspectives on supporting women in the trades. Further programme details were not provided in the announcement.
SMACNA’s participation and its planned collaboration with SMART highlight the role of contractor associations and labour organisations in workforce engagement. Joint initiatives can provide opportunities to share workplace experiences, strengthen labour-management relationships and identify approaches to supporting women in construction careers.
For sheet metal contractors and other construction employers, these industry partnerships offer a forum for discussing workforce inclusion and professional development across the skilled trades.
