Construction Owners Editorial Team

Highlights

  • SMACNA released its 2026 Safety Achievement Awards in two categories: Top Safety Performer and Zero Injury and Illness Incidence.
  • The Zero Injury and Illness Incidence list names 54 contractor members, based on zero reported workplace injuries and illnesses in the applicable reporting year.
  • The Top Safety Performer list names 39 members with incident rates at least 50% below the applicable U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) benchmark for sheet metal contractors.
  • Canadian members are measured against the corresponding applicable benchmark.
  • Recipients include fabricators, mechanical contractors, and testing and balancing firms.

Owners and general contractors weighing mechanical and sheet metal trade partners now have a published list of firms with documented, benchmarked safety results. The Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA) has named its 2026 Safety Achievement Award recipients, and the lists show which member firms met defined, measurable criteria.

Award Criteria

The Top Safety Performer Award goes to members whose incident rates fall at least 50% below the applicable BLS benchmark for sheet metal contractors. Canadian members are evaluated against the equivalent benchmark for their market. The Zero Injury and Illness Incidence Award goes to members that reported no workplace injuries or illnesses during the applicable reporting year.

Top Safety Performer Recipients

The 39 listed recipients include Southland Industries, which appears under both its national and Northwest office listings, along with Murphy Company, J.F. Ahern Co., JH Kelly, MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions, LLC, Streimer, Therma, LLC and Yearout Mechanical, LLC. The full list is available on SMACNA’s website.

Zero Injury and Illness Recipients

The 54 listed recipients include Trotter and Morton, Wm Floyd Company, Ortiz Contracting Group, Scoggin Mechanical Industries, Inc., Swan Island Sheet Metal Works and Youna Mechanical, Inc. (YMI Group). The list also includes several air balancing and testing firms, such as Precision Air Balance Co., Inc. and Fisher Balancing Company, in addition to sheet metal fabricators and mechanical contractors.

Why It Matters

Both awards rely on stated criteria, one tied to a federal benchmark and the other to a zero-incident threshold. Owners and general contractors can use the lists as one reference point when reviewing the safety records of mechanical and sheet metal subcontractors. For contractors, the benchmarks show the performance level required for recognition in the program.
