Q&A with Noelle McCall
What do you see as the biggest opportunity for growth in the construction industry, and how is your company positioned to take advantage of it?
I believe the biggest opportunity for growth in the construction industry is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for contract review. My company is investigating ways to use AI to speed up and enhance the review of insurance and risk-related provisions in contracts. This will also ensure review consistency and help companies identify and manage their contractual risk.
I believe the use of AI for contract review will revolutionize the contract review process across all industries – not just construction – because all companies sign contracts and all have contractual risks.
Did you know most contractors spend 20% to 30% of their time on contract review? Imagine if they could cut that amount of time by 75% or more through the use of contract management systems that incorporate artificial intelligence in the review process! How much more productive and profitable could they become?
As of 2020, there were approximately 738,281 construction companies worldwide. On average, each construction company reviews 800 contracts in a year. I know from experience that it typically takes at least an hour to review insurance and risk-related provisions in one construction contract. If we assume companies are only spending 1 hour on contract review of insurance and risk-related provisions per contract, then the amount of time all these construction companies spend on this piece of the review is at least 590,624,800 hours in a year!
In your line of work, how do you help and guide others to grow?
I get to do what I love to do every day, which is to help teach insurance agents/brokers, risk managers, and lawyers how to do contract reviews from an insurance and risk-related perspective and to do contract reviews for my clients. I also create unique contract review tools, insurance requirement templates, and training presentations to help simplify and streamline the contract review process and reduce client’s contractual risk.
