City officials confirmed that all design, engineering and right-of-way acquisitions for the Dauphin Street Corridor Improvement Project have been completed, clearing the way for construction to move forward. The project targets Dauphin Street on both sides of Interstate 65, stretching from Sage Avenue east of the interstate to Rimes Road on the west side.

The corridor serves as a critical commercial and residential artery and is considered one of Mobile’s busiest traffic routes. City leaders say the two-year construction effort is aimed at easing congestion, improving safety and enhancing access for emergency responders, particularly those serving Spring Hill Medical Center.

Traffic Impacts and Community Meeting Planned

With construction expected to continue through early 2028, city officials plan to brief residents, businesses and media on traffic impacts and construction phasing during a public community meeting. The meeting will be held Tuesday, January 20, at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Dauphin Way Baptist Church, located within the heart of the construction zone.

While some temporary lane closures and nighttime work are anticipated, officials emphasized that traffic will continue to move through the corridor throughout the project.

“Some nighttime work and temporary lane closures are anticipated; however, traffic will be able to flow through the area during the entirety of the project,” the city stated in a press release.

Safety Enhancements and Infrastructure Upgrades

The project includes a series of roadway and traffic improvements designed to reduce collisions and streamline vehicle flow. Planned upgrades include the installation of new fiber-connected, coordinated traffic signals, median modifications to control turning movements, roadway resurfacing, new gutters and enhanced street lighting.

Funding for the project will come from a combination of federal transportation dollars, City of Mobile funds and Mobile County’s Pay-As-You-Go program.

Newly elected Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis emphasized the project’s importance in a statement released Tuesday:

“We’re working to make a highly used section of Dauphin Street safer and more efficient! Through a partnership with the Alabama Department of Transportation, the city will soon be starting infrastructure improvements and traffic safety enhancements on the Dauphin Street corridor near Interstate 65. These changes will better coordinate traffic signals, streamline access to reduce congestion and collisions, and upgrade key infrastructure like streetlights, curbs, and gutters between Rimes Road and Sage Avenue. This will be an extensive project, but the good news is the implementation won’t require the roadway to be closed, though some temporary lane closures will be needed throughout the course of the project. If you’re interested in learning more, we’re going to be hosting a community meeting about the project with Council members Cory Penn and Beau Fleming on Tuesday, January 20, at Dauphin Way Baptist Church. We are looking forward to sharing more about the project and answering questions from the community. In the meantime, you can find more information at cityofmobile.org/dauphin-street-corridor-improvements/.”

City officials say the improvements are expected to deliver long-term safety and efficiency benefits while supporting continued growth along the Dauphin Street corridor.
