The deal strengthens C.W. Matthews’ operations in the Savannah market while also extending the company’s footprint into Northeast Florida, including the Jacksonville area. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Baker Constructors has operated across the Southeast on infrastructure, landfill, industrial and civil construction projects spanning from Virginia to Florida. Under the transaction, Baker’s grading and sitework operations will continue as part of a newly established Baker Division within C.W. Matthews.

Company officials said approximately 225 Baker employees officially joined the organization as part of the integration process completed May 1, 2024.

The acquisition reflects ongoing consolidation trends in the heavy civil construction sector, where contractors are expanding geographically to pursue growing transportation, utility and infrastructure opportunities throughout fast-growing Sun Belt markets.

What This Means For Construction Owners

For construction owners and public agencies, contractor consolidation can increase regional delivery capacity while broadening access to specialized services such as highway construction, grading and site development. Expanded contractor footprints may also improve workforce availability and equipment deployment across state lines.

The Southeast remains one of the nation’s most active infrastructure and population growth corridors, driving continued demand for transportation improvements, industrial development and civil construction services.

C.W. Matthews has long been active in Georgia transportation and asphalt markets, and the Baker acquisition positions the company to compete more aggressively for projects tied to continued growth in coastal Georgia and Florida.
