Hensel Phelps Oldtimer’s Club: Honoring Traditions Since 1958

The Oldtimer’s Club

One of the most cherished traditions at Hensel Phelps, the Oldtimer’s Club (OTC) has been a symbol of commitment and loyalty since its inception in 1958. Founded by Hensel Phelps' founder Joseph Phelps, the club was established to recognize those craftsmen who demonstrated unwavering dedication to the company. What started as a modest gathering has grown into an annual tradition, celebrating the values of commitment, progress, and community within Hensel Phelps.

The Origins

The Oldtimer’s Club began as a simple, yet powerful idea: to honor employees who had chosen to remain with the company for the long term. Joseph Phelps kickstarted this tradition with Saturday morning breakfast meetings at the Longs Peak Café in Greeley, Colorado. These informal gatherings allowed craftspeople to discuss the week’s work, company matters, and exchange ideas on training. As the company grew, so did the club’s membership. To further honor this group, Joseph Phelps introduced the iconic gold hardhat – a symbol of achievement, pride, and Oldtimer’s Club membership.

The Oldtimer’s Club Today

Now, the Oldtimer’s Club continues to be a cornerstone of Hensel Phelps' identity, with over 2,000 members. Employees who reach the five-year milestone with the company are inducted into the club and celebrated annually at a special awards banquet. During the event, recipients are awarded the gold helmet, signifying their loyalty and contributions to the company.

The first Oldtimer’s awards banquet took place on November 29, 1963, at the Greeley Country Club with only 17 attendees. Over the years, the event has expanded to include thousands of Hensel Phelps employees, transforming from a simple awards ceremony into a true celebration of the company’s culture and community.

A Legacy of Dedication

To all the Oldtimers, both past and present, thank you for your continued commitment and for making Hensel Phelps more than just a workplace, but a true family. Your dedication is the foundation of the company's success and growth.
