The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) has announced that construction on Interstate 90 near exit 101 at Wasta will begin Monday, March 2, 2026, marking the second phase of a major bridge replacement project.

Located near Wasta, the project focuses on replacing the eastbound Interstate 90 bridge over Bull Creek, along with approach grading and new asphalt surfacing to improve long-term durability and safety.
The work represents continued investment in critical transportation infrastructure along one of South Dakota’s primary east-west corridors.
This phase includes demolition and replacement of the eastbound lanes bridge structure over Bull Creek. Crews will also complete grading work and install new asphalt surfacing to ensure a smooth transition between the bridge and roadway.
The current work follows completion of Phase 1, which involved replacing the westbound bridge. That portion of the project was finalized in November 2025.
By sequencing construction in phases, SDDOT has been able to maintain traffic flow on I-90 while upgrading both structures.
Motorists traveling through the area should expect significant traffic pattern adjustments during construction.
Traffic will be routed through the project area in a two-way configuration using the westbound lanes for approximately three miles. To improve safety for both drivers and construction crews, speed limits will be reduced within the project zone.
The speed limit on I-90 will be lowered from 80 mph to 65 mph throughout the project area, 24 hours a day. When workers are present in adjacent lanes, speeds will be further reduced to 45 mph.
Drivers are urged to remain alert for suddenly slowing or stopped traffic and to watch for construction workers and equipment operating near the roadway.
Travelers can access updated road and weather conditions, closures, and work zone information through the state’s 511 system.
The overall cost of the project is $15.1 million, reflecting the scale of structural improvements and roadway enhancements being completed at the site. The prime contractor for the project is Heavy Constructors Inc. of Rapid City.
Construction is expected to continue through the summer, with a projected completion date of Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026.
Once complete, the upgraded bridges and roadway approaches will enhance safety, improve ride quality, and extend the lifespan of this key segment of Interstate 90.

SDDOT officials emphasize that the agency’s mission is to provide a safe and efficient public transportation system across the state. Infrastructure upgrades like the Bull Creek bridge replacement are part of a broader effort to maintain reliable freight and passenger travel routes.
Interstate 90 serves as a vital corridor for tourism, agriculture, and commercial transportation across western South Dakota. Maintaining bridge integrity and roadway quality is essential to minimizing disruptions and supporting economic activity throughout the region.
For additional project details, motorists are encouraged to visit the SDDOT website or use the state’s 511 traveler information system for real-time updates.
