Levee Park Construction Brings Visible Changes to Marietta Riverfront

Construction Owners Editorial Team

Construction activity tied to Marietta’s levee park project is becoming increasingly visible as crews move into the first major phase of work along the city’s riverfront corridor.

While minor construction has been underway since early winter, Phase One is now bringing more noticeable changes to Ohio Street, particularly near its intersection with Second Street. Heavy equipment has been staged in the area as crews begin work designed to modernize infrastructure and improve access to the riverfront.

Utility Relocation and Riverfront Visibility Improvements

Marietta Development Director Geoff Schenkel said the initial focus of construction is centered on utilities and sightlines along the river.

“The focus right now is to get the electrical lines away from the view of the river,” said Schenkel. “The goal is to have an unobstructed view of the river.”

To achieve that goal, visible electric lines along Ohio Street are being removed and relocated underground. Schenkel said AEP Ohio is also performing work on Green Street, where a combination of underground and aboveground electrical systems will continue to serve nearby businesses during and after construction.

Roadway Reconstruction and ADA Accessibility Upgrades

In addition to utility relocation, Phase One includes significant roadway reconstruction.

“Another part of phase one is redoing the retaining wall and Ohio Street itself from Second Street to the fountain,” he said. “It’s going to be completely rebuilt with drainage and cross slope.”

Cross slope refers to the slight tilt built into roadways to ensure proper drainage, helping prevent water buildup and long-term pavement damage. According to Schenkel, crews will rebuild the roadway foundation, install appropriate drainage systems, and prepare the surface so brick pavers can be properly placed.

The reconstruction is also intended to eliminate steep or uneven sections of pavement and bring the roadway into compliance with ADA accessibility standards, improving safety and usability for pedestrians and drivers alike.

Phase One of the levee park project is expected to wrap up in early to mid-spring. The overall project carries a firm completion deadline of September, which Schenkel said is tied to funding requirements under the Appalachian Community Grant Program.

“There’s been construction for a little bit now but it’s starting to become more eye-catching,” he said.

During construction, Ohio Street will experience closures and traffic pattern adjustments. Officials said clear signage and detour instructions will be posted to help motorists navigate the area safely and efficiently.

City officials emphasized that changes will continue gradually over the coming months as additional phases progress, with the completed project expected to significantly enhance Marietta’s riverfront appearance, accessibility, and long-term infrastructure.
