According to a community announcement, the program is designed to meet growing industry demand for qualified diesel mechanics by combining hands-on experience with structured classroom learning. The apprenticeship provides participants with a clearly defined training pathway while allowing employers to develop skilled workers from within their organization.

Apprentices enrolled in the program will complete 6,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of experienced mentors at Manthei Construction. In addition to field-based instruction, participants will complete 432 hours of online coursework through Penn Foster. This academic component will be supplemented by employer-provided proprietary classes tailored to Manthei’s equipment, processes, and safety standards.

The initiative marks the introduction of a U.S. Department of Labor registered diesel mechanic apprenticeship in the region, representing a new opportunity for individuals interested in skilled trades careers and for employers seeking long-term workforce solutions.

One of the first participants, Zachary Piechan, said the program is already providing valuable hands-on experience.

"I am glad to be a part of Manthei and to be able to be in their apprenticeship program to become a diesel mechanic. Currently, I am enjoying my welding classes and looking forward to all I will learn and do in the next three years," Piechan said in the announcement.

Manthei Construction officials emphasized the importance of collaboration in expanding apprenticeship opportunities. Shauna Sutton, the company’s human resource and payroll manager, said the new program reflects a broader commitment to workforce development.

“We are grateful for the partnership with the Northwest Michigan Works! apprenticeship team in expanding our USDOL registered apprenticeship programs to now include the occupation of diesel mechanic, first of its kind in the region," Sutton said.

Northwest Michigan Works! officials noted that registered apprenticeships are a proven model for addressing workforce shortages while providing participants with industry-recognized credentials. The organization provides technical assistance and administrative support for apprenticeships, including program development, implementation, and ongoing management.

Evelyn Szpliet, regional director of apprenticeship services, said the partnership demonstrates how employers and workforce organizations can collaborate to meet evolving industry needs.

“Northwest Michigan Works! is proud to sponsor Manthei Construction and Zach in this innovative registered apprenticeship program. Our team is excited to launch this brand new occupation in our region for progressive employers like Manthei Construction," Szpliet said.

Officials said the program is expected to help build a reliable talent pipeline of highly skilled diesel mechanics while offering participants stable employment, structured training, and long-term career opportunities in the construction and heavy equipment sectors.
