A major hyperscale data center investment is headed to Alberta, adding momentum to North America's expanding digital infrastructure market. Meta has selected Sturgeon County for a new 1-gigawatt data center campus that will require significant construction activity and supporting infrastructure investment.
Meta announced plans to build the Sturgeon Data Centre in Sturgeon County, Alberta, representing an investment of more than CA$13 billion.
The project will include approximately CA$60 million in upgrades to local infrastructure, including roadway and water system improvements needed to support construction and long-term operations.
Construction is expected to create demand for a substantial workforce, with approximately 3,000 workers anticipated onsite during peak construction. Once operational, the facility is expected to employ more than 300 people.
Frost Collective, a joint venture between Clark Builders and PCL Construction, has been selected as the project's general contractor.
The data center is planned as a 1-gigawatt facility supported by new electrical generation and transmission infrastructure developed in coordination with Alberta's energy partners.
Meta stated that it will fund the infrastructure required to meet the facility's electricity demand, including investments in power generation and grid upgrades. The company also plans to match the facility's electricity consumption with clean energy resources.
The campus will incorporate a closed-loop liquid cooling system with dry cooling technology to reduce operational water use. Meta is also supporting watershed conservation efforts in Alberta through environmental partnerships.
Demand for hyperscale data centers continues to generate significant construction opportunities across North America, requiring large-scale site development, utility expansion, power infrastructure and specialized building systems. For construction owners, contractors and developers, projects of this scale create sustained work across civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and utility sectors while driving investment in regional infrastructure.
