City officials, development leaders, and local stakeholders break ground on world-class venue slated to open in 2027

MOBILE, Ala. — The City of Mobile reached a significant milestone this week as officials joined the Oak View Group (OVG) and project partners to officially break ground on the long-anticipated Mobile Arena. The state-of-the-art entertainment complex, which will rise on the former 22-acre site of the Mobile Civic Center, is expected to reshape the city’s cultural landscape and elevate its status as a premier destination for live events across the Gulf Coast.

Leaders from across the city and private sector gathered on Wednesday to mark the start of construction. The arena, a result of years of planning, public input, and investment, will open its doors in 2027 with a promise to deliver world-class live music, family entertainment, sporting events — including ice hockey — and uniquely tailored experiences for Mobile’s storied Mardi Gras tradition.

“After years of discussion and months of planning, we are beyond excited to see construction officially begin at Mobile Arena,” said Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson. “This will be a game-changer for Mobilians and visitors in our city. It will make Mobile a true event destination — driving tourism and providing residents with quality events to enjoy with their friends, families, and neighbors.”

The groundbreaking ceremony also brought exciting partnership news. Oak View Group announced that Mobile Coca-Cola Bottling Company will become the arena’s first founding partner and its official beverage provider. Facilitated by OVG Global Partnerships, the deal will integrate Coca-Cola products into the venue while launching region-wide promotional campaigns, fan giveaways, and sustainability initiatives.

“We’re proud to partner with the City of Mobile on this transformative project and to welcome Mobile Coca-Cola Bottling Company as the official beverage rights partner,” said Dan Griffis, president of Global Partnerships for Oak View Group. “Coca-Cola is a terrific partner who will help us enhance Mobile Arena’s initiatives through imaginative and creative customer activations across the region.”

The new venue will offer flexible configurations, with capacity for more than 10,000 spectators and spaces adaptable for smaller shows, large concerts, conventions, and even lavish Mardi Gras balls. Its modern design includes multiple ballrooms, retail zones, luxury suites, VIP clubs, and premier seating options — all built to deliver dynamic acoustics and exceptional sightlines.

“As the global leader in live experience venue development, management, and premium hospitality, OVG brings unparalleled expertise to this partnership. OVG owns and operates a wide range of venues globally, including stadiums, arenas, theaters, convention centers, and cultural attractions. Together with Live Nation, they will bring in the performances and events that draw visitors from across the region,” OVG shared in a statement.

“The Mobile Arena project reflects everything we believe in at Oak View Group – creating world-class venues that serve their communities and deliver unforgettable live experiences,” said Peter Luukko, co-chair of Oak View Group. “Together, we’re building a destination that reflects the spirit of Mobile while attracting top-tier music, sports and community events to the Gulf Coast.”

Construction will be led by BL Harbert International, the Alabama-based construction firm known for major projects worldwide, including regional venues like the Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center in Mobile and Neville Arena at Auburn University.

“The new arena will stand as a powerful symbol of Mobile’s unwavering commitment to progress and endless possibilities,” said Dan Price, senior vice president of the Commercial Division for BL Harbert International. “BL Harbert International is honored to serve as the construction partner helping to bring this vision to life.”

The design of the venue results from a close collaboration between the city, local stakeholders, and operational partners. It was developed by the architectural firms Goodwyn Mills Cawood and Populous, both with track records in delivering cutting-edge sports and entertainment venues.

“Goodwyn Mills Cawood is thrilled and honored to play a role in such a transformative project happening right here in our own backyard,” said Goodwyn Mills Cawood Senior Architect Keith Parker. “This cutting-edge venue will bring live entertainment, concerts, and — of course — our beloved Mardi Gras celebrations to new heights. With the City of Mobile proudly embracing the motto ‘Born to Celebrate,’ we’re more than ready to join in the festivities!”

Once completed, Mobile Arena is expected to drive substantial economic and tourism growth for Alabama’s Port City, providing a modern venue that blends local culture with global entertainment.
