SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced a significant shift in how missionaries will serve at Temple Square as preparations continue for the reopening of the Salt Lake Temple following its extensive renovation.

Under the new model, sister missionaries called to serve in Utah will divide their time between their assigned Utah missions and Temple Square, rather than being dedicated solely to the Temple Square mission. Church leaders said the approach mirrors successful visitor center missionary models already in use at other temple sites around the world.
As part of the transition, all sister missionaries currently serving exclusively at Temple Square will be reassigned to surrounding Utah missions over the next several months. The church said the Utah Salt Lake City Temple Square Mission will be formally discontinued, with the process expected to be completed by July.
“This adjustment is designed to enhance the Temple Square guest experience and increase missionary opportunities. With missionaries coming from multiple missions to serve on Temple Square, more can be available during major events and peak visitor periods.”

Church leaders noted that during slower visitation periods, sister missionaries will spend more time ministering and teaching within their designated mission areas, allowing for greater flexibility and more effective use of missionary resources.
In addition to the reassignment of sister missionaries, the church said a “limited number” of returned missionaries will be hired on a part-time basis to assist with visitor services and help “enhancing the guest experience” at Temple Square.
“Missionaries at Temple Square play an important role in sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ, as they welcome millions of visitors from around the world,” said Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. “The Church expresses gratitude for these faithful sisters who have served in this mission over the years. Moving forward, the dedicated service of sister missionaries will continue to be a blessing and allow Temple Square to be a place of inspiration for people of all faiths and backgrounds.”
The announcement comes as anticipation builds for the Salt Lake Temple open house, expected to draw large crowds following years of renovation work. Church officials emphasized that the updated missionary structure is intended to better accommodate increased visitor traffic while maintaining the spiritual and educational role Temple Square serves for people worldwide.
On Friday, the church also announced that the First Presidency has called new mission presidents and their companions to lead 188 missions worldwide, including 55 newly established missions. According to a church release, those couples will begin their three-year terms of service on July 1.
