Celebrating Academic and Athletic Success

During the meeting, Junior-Senior High School Principal Cheryl Bertsch shared exciting news about the boys' basketball team, who made it to the first round of playoffs, marking another milestone for OISD’s student-athletes.

The district also celebrated Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month in February, which focuses on equipping students with practical skills and knowledge for in-demand careers. Assistant Superintendent Geoffery Bowdoin recognized CTE teachers for their dedication to preparing students for future success in various professions, emphasizing the value of real-world learning opportunities that complement traditional academic paths.

Election Update and Board Decisions

In a development that will impact the upcoming election cycle, OISD successfully canceled its May 3 school trustee election, as three incumbents filed for reelection to the "at-large" positions without opposition. Trustees Ted Wiggins, Dennis Hodge, and Chris Topkins will continue their service on the board, further contributing to OISD’s long-term planning and vision.

The board also approved a request to apply for a staff development waiver with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) due to days missed from recent weather events. This waiver will ensure that OISD maintains its educational schedule while accounting for the disruptions caused by severe weather.

Policy Updates and Staff Enhancements

No action was taken on the first reading of TASB Policy Update 124, allowing for further review of proposed changes.

In a move to improve the district innovation plan, the board amended the transfer student procedures to streamline the enrollment process and provide greater clarity for families navigating the system.

Additionally, the board authorized Dr. Fraga to contract with professional personnel through August 2025 to expedite hiring and ensure that OISD attracts quality candidates for positions across the district. This decision underscores the district's commitment to securing top-tier talent for both administrative and educational roles.

The board also approved the adoption of the official school calendar for the 2025-2026 school year, aligning with the district’s academic planning for the future.

Personnel Decisions and New Appointments

Following an executive session to deliberate personnel matters, the board approved the employment of Donnielle Rodriquez as the new math instructional coach for the district. This hire is expected to play a key role in supporting math instruction and providing additional resources to ensure student success.

Other staff decisions included contracts for the assistant superintendent, director of technology, athletic director, and both campus principals, ensuring continued leadership and support for the district’s operations.

Recognizing Student and Staff Achievements

The board took time to celebrate the achievements of students and staff through the Student Spotlight and Staff Spotlight awards.

  • Ryan Worthington, a Junior-Senior High School student, received the Student Spotlight award for his exceptional academic performance. Worthington will graduate with an associate’s degree and has earned a full scholarship to Middlebury College in Vermont.
  • Hayley Hudson, an Elementary School student, was recognized for her remarkable character and positive attitude. She exemplifies the Wildcat Way by consistently helping peers and teachers with a smile.
  • Haiden Miller, another Elementary School student, was honored for his outstanding academic and extracurricular contributions and his dedication to excellent citizenship.

Staff Spotlight awards were presented to:

  • Terri Boyce, a Junior-Senior High School teacher, who was praised for building strong relationships with students and creating engaging, high-level lessons.
  • Austin Mengler, an Elementary School teacher, was recognized for his ability to foster positive learning experiences and provide leadership to his team, ensuring the academic growth of third-grade students.

Ongoing Community Engagement and Support

Throughout the meeting, OISD highlighted its commitment to community engagement and continued collaboration with local organizations. The district’s focus on education, athletics, and service ensures that students are well-prepared for future success, both in school and beyond. As construction continues on the new high school, OISD remains focused on its mission to provide exceptional educational opportunities and enhance the overall student experience.
