The construction firm ranked No. 91 on this year’s list, matching its position from 2025 and standing as the only company from Colorado to make the prestigious ranking.

The annual list highlights companies across industries that excel in workplace culture, employee satisfaction and organizational trust. Unlike some rankings, Fortune does not categorize companies by size, placing PCL among top-performing employers nationwide regardless of workforce scale.

Strong Workplace Culture Drives Recognition

Fortune compiles its list using a proprietary survey that gathers both quantitative and qualitative feedback directly from employees. The methodology focuses heavily on trust, workplace experience and overall employee engagement.

For PCL, the recognition underscores its long-standing emphasis on employee ownership and culture. The company operates as a 100% employee-owned organization, a structure that often contributes to higher engagement and accountability across teams.

“PCL has a very unique atmosphere and culture that brings out the best in people,” Fortune quoted PCL employees as saying. “I feel like we have the best employees around and that inspires me to be better.”

The company’s portfolio spans civil infrastructure, heavy industrial and solar construction projects, with operations across the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Australia. According to Fortune, PCL completes more than $8 billion in work annually, making it one of the largest contracting organizations in North America.

Broader Rankings Highlight Industry Competition

In addition to its Fortune ranking, PCL also appeared on a separate list compiled by Forbes, which ranked mid-sized companies with 1,000 to 5,000 employees. On that list, PCL also placed No. 91 among 500 companies nationwide.

The Forbes rankings included 19 Colorado-based companies across both mid-sized and large categories, with three firms placing in the top 100 of their respective groups.

Fortune’s top 10 companies for 2026 reflect a diverse mix of industries, including finance, hospitality, technology and consulting. Leading the list were firms such as Synchrony, Hilton and Cisco, followed by American Express and NVIDIA, among others.

Despite strong competition from global brands, PCL’s consistent placement highlights the construction sector’s growing emphasis on workforce development and employee well-being—areas that have historically lagged behind other industries.

As labor shortages and workforce retention remain key challenges in construction, recognition from major rankings like Fortune’s may play an increasingly important role in attracting and retaining talent.
