Construction on the Pensacola Beach Gateway Improvements Project is scheduled to begin in January 2026, marking a significant infrastructure upgrade at the entrance to Pensacola Beach. The project will replace the existing Bob Sikes Toll Plaza with a modern toll gantry system designed to improve safety, traffic flow, and emergency access.

“The Pensacola Beach Gateway Improvements Project is funded by Local Option Sales Tax, Tourist Development Tax, and Bob Sikes Toll revenue funds, with construction costs totaling $6,559,570.56,” according to the county. “The Green-Simmons Company, Inc. is the primary contractor, and Mott MacDonald will provide construction inspection and daily monitoring for Escambia County.”
Escambia County’s Construction Management Division will oversee the work, which includes demolishing the current toll plaza and installing a new toll gantry equipped with toll-by-plate technology, CCTV cameras, and updated fiber optic communications. Roadway replacement will also take place once the existing toll booth is removed.

According to the county, the project “includes demolition of the current Bob Sikes Toll Plaza to build a new toll gantry with applicable toll-by-plate equipment, CCTV cameras, and new fiber optic communications. Work also includes replacing the roadway once the existing toll booth is demolished. The new toll gantry will offer enhanced safety features, such as better access for emergency response vehicles, while also helping to reduce congestion at the entrance to Pensacola Beach.”
Construction is expected to occur Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., although work may extend into nights or weekends if needed to maintain the project schedule. County officials said access to Pensacola Beach will remain open throughout construction, though drivers should anticipate periodic lane closures and traffic detours.
“Vehicles will have access to Pensacola Beach during the work period, though lane closures and traffic detours may be in place at times,” the county says.
Motorists traveling through the work zone are encouraged to drive cautiously and follow posted signage and instructions from construction crews. The county emphasized that traffic management will be actively monitored to minimize disruptions during peak travel periods.
The Pensacola Beach Gateway Improvements Project is expected to be completed by summer 2026. County officials noted that additional updates will be provided if roadway closures or schedule adjustments become necessary as construction progresses.
