BRANFORD, CT — The Branford Police Department’s facility at 33 Laurel St., built in 1995, is undergoing a major renovation project, approved in 2023, to address a wide range of concerns impacting its functionality, security, and efficiency.

The renovations come in response to numerous issues, including an outdated HVAC system that fails to regulate temperatures effectively across the building, roof leaks, water vapor transmission, and aging windows that no longer provide modern energy efficiencies. The female locker room is too small to accommodate current needs, and the outdated prisoner cells lack essential features such as adequate ventilation, fresh air return, and fire suppression systems. Additionally, the building's physical fitness space for officers is limited, and the facility has insufficient parking for both the public and police, raising significant security concerns due to unrestricted access.
The ongoing renovations aim to address these issues and provide a safer, more efficient space for the police department. "These improvements are necessary for the future of our department and to better serve our community," said the police department in an update shared on social media.
While construction is ongoing, the Branford Police Department reassured the public that all services are "fully operational," and the department continues to provide essential services to the community. "We want to assure you that our services remain open and fully operational," the department stated in their Facebook post.
In light of the construction, the department has encouraged residents to utilize alternative methods for accessing certain services. "There is limited parking at headquarters, so if you are looking for police records, it may be easier to email pdrecords@branfordpolice.com, and we can send record(s) available electronically," they advised.
For those requiring in-person assistance, the Branford Police Department remains reachable at 203-481-4241 for non-emergency inquiries, while emergency situations should still be directed to 911.
"We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time. Stay tuned for more updates on our progress," the department’s social media post concluded. "Thank you for your continued support."
The project is expected to improve both the functionality and security of the police headquarters for years to come, ultimately enhancing the ability of the department to serve the community. The renovations reflect the department's commitment to creating a safer and more efficient environment for its officers and the residents of Branford.
