Rhode Island School District Breaks Ground on Modernization Projects

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Providence Public School District (PPSD) has recently kicked off two major school construction projects aimed at enhancing learning experiences for pre-K through 8th grade students. These projects are part of PPSD’s larger goal to increase the percentage of students attending high-quality schools from 5% to 100% by 2030. To achieve this, the district is implementing a groundbreaking $1 billion school facilities plan.

“Through collaboration among PPSD, RIDE and the City of Providence, we’re creating more 21st century schools that meet the academic and social-emotional needs of students,” said Angélica Infante-Green, Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) commissioner. “Families have long called for transformational improvements to facilities, and we are answering those calls.”

Harry Kizirian Pre-K-8 School

The first of these transformative projects is the $55.2 million Harry Kizirian Pre-K-8 School, which broke ground on Dec. 20. This new school is a significant part of PPSD’s districtwide effort to modernize educational spaces. The facility will include dedicated areas for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), alongside spaces for enriching arts education.

“Today marks an exciting moment for our community as we break ground on the new Harry Kizirian School,” said Providence Mayor Brett P. Smiley. “This project is more than just the construction of a new building—it’s a significant investment in our future. We are creating a modern learning environment where every student will have the resources they need to succeed.”

The new Harry Kizirian Pre-K-8 School will replace the 1960s-era facility, which had suffered from aging issues such as leaking roofs. The new building will bring elementary and middle school students together in one space, easing their transition from early childhood through middle school environments. Sustainability is a key focus, with renewable energy sources incorporated into the design.

In terms of safety and functionality, the facility will feature a secure, renovated lobby with safer drop-off areas and separate entrances for different grade levels. There will also be a dedicated playspace for Pre-K and Kindergarten students, while a nearby recreation center will help integrate the wider community.

Funding for this new facility is supported by $45 million in state funding.

Frank D. Spaziano Middle School Construction

Another significant milestone for PPSD took place on Dec. 2, when a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Frank D. Spaziano Middle School campus. After receiving approval in May 2022, this $34.5 million project will transform the existing Spaziano Elementary School and Annex into a comprehensive learning hub for pre-K through 8th grade students. The new campus will feature dual-language immersion programs, STEAM-focused learning environments, and spaces dedicated to special education, media, student wellness, and technology integration.

“Breaking ground at Spaziano is a symbol of what is possible when leaders, educators, and the community come together and prioritize the needs of our kids,” said PPSD Superintendent Javier Montañez, Ed.D. “Providence students deserve the best, and this new middle school campus will help unlock their potential while ensuring they have the tools to succeed in today’s world. We’re proud to be making progress in our mission to offer 100% of Providence access to a new or like-new school to learn and thrive in.”

With these projects underway, the Providence Public School District is making major strides toward its goal of providing all students with access to high-quality, modern learning environments.
