Developing skilled labor representatives remains an important part of workforce management across manufacturing and industrial sectors. SMART Union has continued its investment in labor leadership training through its annual Production Institute, aimed at strengthening the ability of union officials and stewards to represent production workers in workplace matters.
The weeklong program was held in Kansas City, Missouri, and brought together participants from local unions representing workers involved in manufacturing activities ranging from HVAC equipment production to industrial fabrication and other specialized sectors.
A significant portion of this year's program focused on grievance processing and dispute resolution. SMART Union's Education Department and Production Workers Department implemented a revised training structure that combined new participants with individuals who began the program in 2025.
Attendees worked through simulated workplace disputes, guiding cases from initial reporting and investigation through negotiations and arbitration proceedings. The exercises were designed to provide practical experience in handling labor-management issues and preparing representatives for real-world workplace challenges.
Participants were evaluated on their ability to resolve disputes efficiently and navigate the grievance process effectively.
Advanced participants continued training in arbitration preparation and collective bargaining practices. The curriculum included mock negotiations and representation exercises intended to strengthen leadership skills and contract administration capabilities.
The Production Institute operates as a multi-year educational program, providing progressive instruction for union representatives responsible for supporting production workers across North America.
SMART Union also announced that the program is no longer limited to invited participants. Full-time union officials and approved production stewards from local organizations can now register through the union's education program offerings.
For construction owners, specialty contractors, manufacturers, and industrial employers, effective labor-management communication plays an important role in workforce stability and project delivery. Training programs focused on grievance resolution, contract administration, and leadership development can help improve workplace collaboration and support skilled labor retention across manufacturing and construction-related industries.
