According to a recent report from The Bama Buzz, 22 building permits exceeding $1 million were issued statewide over the past week, signaling continued momentum in both residential and commercial construction sectors. Projects span multiple cities, including Huntsville, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Anniston.

At the forefront is The Mark Auburn, which received the largest permit valuation at approximately $16 million. The project underscores ongoing demand for student housing tied to university-driven population growth.

Student Housing Project Anchors Auburn Growth

The Mark Auburn is being developed as an 825-bed student housing community, with Bailey-Harris Construction serving as the builder. The mid-rise project will include 329 residential units ranging from studio apartments to five-bedroom layouts.

Construction plans call for delivery ahead of the Fall 2028 academic term, positioning the development to accommodate future enrollment demand. Units will come fully furnished and equipped with modern amenities such as high-speed internet connectivity, quartz countertops, stainless-steel appliances and in-unit laundry.

The project also includes an extensive amenity package designed to attract student tenants. Features include 31,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor shared space, a rooftop pool, clubhouse, fitness center and study areas. Additional offerings such as a sports simulator, grilling areas, fire pits and a rooftop entertainment space highlight the competitive nature of today’s student housing market.

Parking infrastructure is also a key component, with space allocated for more than 850 vehicles, along with dedicated storage for bicycles and scooters.

Beyond Auburn, the broader list of permits reflects a diverse mix of construction activity across Alabama. Projects include commercial developments, institutional upgrades and smaller residential builds, with values ranging from just over $1 million to more than $11 million.

In Birmingham, permits were issued for projects tied to University of Alabama Birmingham and Regions Bank, highlighting continued investment in both education and financial infrastructure. Meanwhile, Decatur saw a permit exceeding $11 million, reflecting ongoing industrial and commercial expansion.

The data, compiled with assistance from Report Construction LLC, provides a snapshot of weekly construction activity and offers insight into broader economic trends across the state. Industry observers often look to permit activity as an early indicator of future construction volume, as projects move from planning into execution.

Overall, the latest figures suggest steady demand for new development across Alabama, particularly in fast-growing regions tied to education, healthcare and industrial growth. Large-scale residential projects like The Mark Auburn continue to play a central role in meeting housing demand while supporting local economies.
