TPA Recycles 100% of Concrete for Airside D Expansion

At Tampa International Airport (TPA), expansion and environmental responsibility are taking flight together. As construction progresses on the highly anticipated Airside D, the airport is setting a powerful precedent for sustainable development by recycling 100% of the concrete from the previous airside structure.

In total, approximately 70,000 tons—or 450,000 square feet—of concrete apron are being repurposed. That’s roughly the weight of 127,000 manatees! Rather than sending this material to a landfill, TPA is crushing it on-site and reusing it to form the foundations of the new Airside D. Additional materials are also being stockpiled for use in future airport infrastructure projects.
“This initiative demonstrates how responsible development can go hand in hand with progress,” a TPA representative said. “We’re not only expanding world-class facilities—we’re doing it in a way that minimizes our environmental impact.”
This circular construction approach is a key part of a $90 million contract, which also includes new security fencing and critical utility upgrades. Once completed, Airside D will span 600,000 square feet—making it the largest airside at Tampa International Airport. The project is designed to meet growing passenger demand while also enhancing the airport’s operational efficiency and traveler experience.
The airport’s commitment to sustainability ensures that this vital expansion not only supports regional growth but also helps shape a more resilient, eco-conscious future for Florida.
TPA’s Airside D project exemplifies the future of green infrastructure in aviation. By fully repurposing existing materials, the airport is significantly reducing construction waste and carbon emissions typically associated with large-scale demolition and hauling.
The crushed concrete is being used in multiple phases of the expansion, serving as a structural base layer while saving on procurement costs and transport-related emissions. It also showcases Tampa International’s growing role as a national leader in sustainable airport design.
Once completed, the new airside will help ease terminal congestion, improve gate availability, and provide travelers with upgraded amenities in a modern, energy-efficient facility. This project is not only an investment in capacity—but in climate-conscious innovation and community stewardship.
