Vermont Construction Academy Launches to Bolster Skilled Trades Workforce

A new initiative is taking shape in Vermont to tackle the state’s skilled labor shortage and build sustainable career pathways in construction. The Vermont Construction Academy (VCA) officially launched last week in Winooski, aiming to deliver hands-on training, industry-recognized certifications, and direct connections to employers for individuals seeking high-demand jobs in the trades.

The Academy is designed to prepare participants for entry-level and advanced roles in construction, offering both practical experience and a bridge to long-term career growth. Its launch comes at a critical time: while the national construction industry continues to expand, Vermont’s contractors face a persistent challenge in finding qualified workers.
“The Vermont Construction Academy was built to empower people with the skills and confidence to succeed as construction professionals,” said Josh Reap, President of ABC NH/VT and Chair of the Academy’s Board of Directors. “This is about more than workforce development—it’s about giving people the chance to build futures they can be proud of.”
The need for skilled workers is underscored by national data. The Associated General Contractors of America reports that U.S. construction employment hit 8.3 million in August 2024, representing a 2.8% increase from the previous year and a nearly 9% jump from pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, the Associated Builders and Contractors estimates that the industry will need to attract 439,000 additional workers in 2025 to meet growing construction demand.
To address these gaps, the VCA is launching with two core programs:
- A Carpentry Boot Camp, kicking off in July, which provides foundational skills for those new to the industry.
- A Commercial Carpentry Apprenticeship, starting in September, designed for individuals seeking a more structured pathway into advanced construction roles.
Enrollment for both programs is now open, and interest is already growing among Vermonters eager to join the trades.
What makes the Academy’s approach unique is its collaborative foundation. Construction companies that often compete for projects—such as PC Construction and ReArch Construction—have partnered to support the initiative, putting workforce development ahead of competition.
“I have had such a wonderful career in construction and am excited to help bring a new generation into this great industry,” said Martin Pigeon, Craft Manager at PC Construction. “Opportunities for young people are limitless, especially with a resource like the Vermont Construction Academy to set each candidate up for success.”
Beyond technical training, the Academy emphasizes the dignity and pride associated with careers in the trades. “This is a skilled career path, not a backup plan,” Pigeon added. “Tradespeople are the backbone of our communities, and their work provides the everyday comforts we often take for granted. At the VCA, we respect, train, and support the next generation of builders who will contribute to the growth and prosperity of our future.”
Local leaders and industry advocates have praised the initiative as a critical step toward meeting Vermont’s housing and infrastructure needs, while also offering economic mobility to residents.
The VCA plans to expand its offerings in the coming years to include additional trades and specialty certifications, reflecting ongoing input from employers and industry associations.
