Modernizing aging electrical infrastructure across New York City's subway network is the focus of a new engineering assignment awarded to STV by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Construction & Development (MTA C&D).
STV will provide general engineering consultant services for the design phase of improvements at 22 wayside power facilities across the city's four boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. The program is intended to improve the reliability and resilience of the electrical network supporting subway operations.
The design program covers 10 substations and 12 circuit breaker houses. Planned work includes repairs, replacements and modernization of traction power equipment.
Key engineering components include:
STV's responsibilities will include developing project scopes and managing the design program. The existing facilities contain equipment that has exceeded its intended service life, making modernization a priority for reducing unplanned outages and improving recovery from power-related incidents.
STV brings more than 40 years of experience in traction power and wayside power engineering. Its previous work includes substation, circuit breaker house and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system upgrades for transit agencies across North America.
Relevant projects include Second Avenue Subway Phase 2, Grand Central Madison, the CATS LYNX Blue Line Extension, Purple Line Extension Section 3 Stations and Tunnels, Harrison Place Substation Design-Build and Coney Island Yard.
The assignment draws on STV's regional transportation engineering workforce, which includes nearly 1,000 professionals across the Metro New York area.
The design program addresses aging electrical infrastructure that supports daily subway operations across New York City. Modern traction power equipment, improved monitoring and energy recovery evaluations are key components of the planned upgrades.
For infrastructure owners and contractors, the program highlights the engineering and systems integration requirements involved in modernizing operational transit facilities while maintaining the reliability of an active transportation network.
