Construction of the new Alabama Statehouse has experienced delays, but the facility is still expected to be finished in time for the 2027 legislative session, according to reports. The delays, caused by a portion of the project needing to be rebid, will result in a four to six-month setback.
“My goal originally was I was going to be done in ’25,” said Retirement Systems of Alabama CEO David Bronner. “But now it’s going to roll over into 2026, probably the first four to six months.”
The Retirement Systems of Alabama, responsible for constructing the new building for the Alabama Legislature, expects the project to remain within its $325 million budget. Bronner noted that the early stages, including electrical and mechanical work, have come in under budget. However, he also cautioned that unforeseen factors could impact the final cost, referencing potential tariff impacts from President-elect Donald Trump’s policies.
“A lot of crazy things can happen,” Bronner said. “Like, for example, my buddy Mr. Trump, that I’ve known for 30 years, installing tariffs. Which will put a zinger in everybody’s pocket.”
The new Statehouse is being built behind the existing building, which will eventually be demolished and replaced with a park-like area. A new parking deck will be constructed beside the current Statehouse. The Alabama Legislature moved into its current building in 1985 after the Alabama State Capitol was renovated.
In 2020, the idea of using $200 million in federal pandemic relief funds for the project was briefly discussed but faced immediate backlash. The Alabama Legislative Council approved the construction of the new Statehouse last year.
