The project, led by the Grand Valley Creative Alliance (GVCA), will transform 539 Colorado Ave. into a shared community arts studio designed to support artists, educators, nonprofits and residents across the Grand Valley.

A private groundbreaking ceremony was held in November, and crews are now actively building out the space, according to GVCA officials. Architectural plans for the project were developed by Van Montfrans Architecture.

Building a Collaborative Arts Space Downtown

The ARTery is envisioned as more than a traditional studio — it is intended to serve as a centralized hub for creativity, collaboration and community programming in the heart of downtown.

“This is about building lasting capacity for creativity in the Grand Valley,” said GVCA Executive Director Chip Walton. “The ARTery will create opportunity and connection, expanding access to studio space and collaborative programming.”

Once complete, the facility will offer:

  • Dedicated studios for ceramics, fiber arts, printmaking and mixed media;
  • Flexible classroom space for workshops and lifelong learning;
  • Shared work areas designed to foster collaboration;
  • A visible downtown hub that increases access and participation.

By concentrating multiple artistic disciplines under one roof, GVCA hopes to create cross-pollination between creators and expand opportunities for residents who may not otherwise have access to specialized studio space.

$1.6M Campaign Fuels Project Momentum

The ARTery is supported by a $1.6 million capital campaign, anchored by a $1 million lead gift from the Breaux family. That early contribution helped accelerate planning and construction timelines, allowing the project to move from concept to active development.

GVCA leaders say the investment reflects growing recognition of the arts as an economic and cultural driver in western Colorado. Creative hubs such as The ARTery often support small businesses, independent artists and educational initiatives while also increasing foot traffic in downtown districts.

In addition to serving working artists, the facility is expected to host workshops, community events and collaborative programming aimed at strengthening regional arts education and engagement.

Construction is expected to wrap up this summer, positioning The ARTery to open during peak tourism season in Mesa County. Organizers anticipate announcing grand opening events and programming details in the coming months.
