Austin Convention Center Redevelopment Moves into New Phase

Caroline Raffetto

Austin, Texas – The ambitious redevelopment and expansion of the Austin Convention Center has reached a major turning point as the project team, led by Turner Construction Company and JE Dunn Construction, begins diaphragm wall (D-wall) activities. This milestone marks the shift from demolition and site preparation to the start of foundational structural construction.

The D-wall system is a key component of the redevelopment, acting as both the foundation and earth-retention structure for the new convention center. Once completed, it will provide critical support for future excavation and below-grade facilities, ensuring the project’s structural integrity as crews advance toward the next stages of construction.

Progress on Site

Last week, crews began trenching operations in Area E (between 2nd and 3rd Streets on the east side of the site). Specialized trenching equipment is being used to cut deep, narrow channels, which are then filled with reinforced concrete. Initial concrete pours are already complete, rebar cages are being placed, and formwork is being set to strengthen the wall panels.

At the same time, crews are removing drilled piers and foundations from the existing building in adjacent areas, clearing the way for further D-wall installation in the coming weeks. These activities represent far more than technical progress — they officially mark the start of construction on the city’s most significant public redevelopment project in decades.

Building for Austin’s Future

The Austin Convention Center has long served as a vital hub for events, trade shows, and cultural gatherings. Its redevelopment will transform it into a modern, world-class facility capable of accommodating larger conventions, providing state-of-the-art meeting spaces, and enhancing Austin’s reputation as a premier destination for business and tourism.

The expansion will:

  • Double exhibit hall space to meet rising demand from national and international events.
  • Add new meeting rooms, ballrooms, and flexible event spaces.
  • Incorporate sustainable and energy-efficient design practices aligned with Austin’s climate goals.
  • Improve connectivity with pedestrian-friendly streetscapes and surrounding development.

Economic and Community Impact

City officials estimate that the expanded convention center will generate billions in economic activity over the coming decades by drawing larger conventions, creating jobs, and boosting hospitality and tourism revenue. Local businesses, from hotels and restaurants to small vendors, are expected to benefit directly from the surge in convention traffic.

The joint venture between Turner and JE Dunn emphasizes collaboration with local subcontractors, minority- and women-owned businesses, and workforce development programs to ensure the project delivers broad-based community benefits.

Looking Ahead

With diaphragm wall construction underway, the project is on track to continue excavation and foundational work into early 2026. Above-ground structural construction will follow, with completion of the new convention center expected later this decade.

The redevelopment represents a bold investment in Austin’s future, ensuring the city can remain competitive in the global events industry while delivering lasting value to its residents and local economy.
