Black Hawk Bridge to Close This Fall for Replacement

Lansing, IA/Wisconsin – October 17, 2025 – The Black Hawk Bridge, connecting Lansing, Iowa, and Crawford County, Wisconsin, will close permanently on October 20 at 7 a.m., as plans for its replacement continue. The 94-year-old bridge, a vital connection for the region, was originally scheduled for demolition after the new structure opens, but officials moved up the closure due to safety considerations.

“We are very pleased that federal and state agencies, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the city of Lansing, could work together and quickly approve the necessary steps to allow us to provide this critical service,” said Scott Marler, director of the Iowa DOT. “These approvals will allow us to install the infrastructure needed for a car ferry to keep our communities connected when the old bridge needs to be closed.”

Replacement Bridge Construction

The new bridge, being built just 100 feet from the old structure, is designed to be wider and safer. Kraemer North America, based in Plain, is the lead contractor. The new bridge will have a 40-foot-wide deck with shoulders, compared to the old bridge’s 21-foot deck with no shoulders.

“We are providing a new and modern structure that stretches across a beautiful and scenic stretch of the Mississippi River,” said Kristina Boardman, secretary of WisDOT. “The state and federal approvals confirm that we can build the bridge and offer the car ferry service while still maintaining the natural environment that makes this region so special.”

Construction began in fall 2023, with equipment mobilized and the new bridge rising out of the water in 2024 and 2025. Officials expect most of the structure to be completed in 2026, with the new roadway connections on both sides finished by spring 2027.

Temporary Car Ferry Service

To minimize disruption for residents and commuters—around 2,200 vehicles use the bridge daily—Iowa DOT and WisDOT are launching a free car ferry service in early November. The ferry will operate until the new bridge opens in 2027.

Ferry infrastructure, including docks, vehicle queuing areas, and signage, is already under construction. Landings will be at Lansing Marina on the Iowa side and south of the new bridge near the staging area on the Wisconsin side. The ferry service aims to maintain mobility, safety, and access across the Mississippi River during demolition and construction.

Project Purpose and Funding

The new bridge addresses critical issues with the old span, including its narrow deck, rough ride, and deteriorating structural condition. The current bridge, completed in 1931, has served as the only Mississippi River crossing for 60 miles, with the nearest alternatives at La Crosse and Prairie du Chien.

The $140 million project is largely federally funded, with 80% covered by federal funds and the remainder split between Iowa and Wisconsin. Officials say the bridge will support economic growth, safety, and improved transportation infrastructure for decades.

“These approvals and construction plans ensure that we provide a safe, durable, and modern connection for residents and travelers while respecting the natural and cultural significance of this area,” said Kristina Boardman.

Community Impact

Beyond improved safety, the new bridge is expected to enhance commerce, tourism, and daily commuting. The wider deck and shoulders will support heavier traffic and emergency services, while the temporary ferry ensures uninterrupted connectivity for local communities. Local officials encourage residents to monitor updates and plan alternative routes during construction.
