A roadway improvement project aimed at enhancing traffic flow and safety is set to begin in Brookings, South Dakota, later this month, with construction crews preparing to upgrade a key intersection.

Work will officially start on March 30 at the junction of 20th Street South and 22nd Avenue South in Brookings. The project will focus on widening the east side of the intersection to better accommodate truck traffic, an improvement expected to support both local businesses and regional transportation needs.
The initial phase of construction will involve installing temporary traffic signals and shutting down the existing overhead signal system. For approximately the first 30 days, crews will concentrate on relocating electrical utilities to prepare the site for more extensive work.
Once utility relocation is complete, the project will move into demolition and reconstruction. Crews will remove existing concrete and nearby features before beginning grading and pouring new concrete surfaces—an effort expected to take another month.
Despite the active work zone, traffic will remain open in all directions. However, the intersection will operate as a four-way stop controlled by temporary signals, and turn lanes will be closed throughout construction. Drivers should anticipate minor delays and plan travel accordingly.
The project, valued at just over $539,000, is being led by BX Civil & Construction, Inc. and is scheduled for completion by July 19, 2026.
In addition to roadway work, several high mast light poles along 20th Street South—extending toward Interstate 29—will be temporarily turned off. A pedestrian detour will be established along the west side of 22nd Avenue South to maintain safe foot traffic routes.
Importantly, access to nearby businesses and residences will remain open during construction, minimizing disruptions for the local community.
This project reflects a broader push by transportation agencies to modernize infrastructure in growing regional hubs. Brookings, home to expanding commercial activity and increased freight movement, requires intersections that can safely handle larger vehicles and higher traffic volumes.
By widening the intersection and improving layout efficiency, the upgrade is expected to reduce congestion, improve turning movements for trucks, and enhance overall road safety.
The project also highlights the importance of phased construction planning. By prioritizing utility relocation and maintaining traffic flow, transportation officials aim to balance infrastructure improvements with minimal inconvenience to daily commuters.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation continues to encourage drivers to stay updated on road conditions and construction impacts through its 511 system, ensuring safer navigation through work zones.
