Byron Solar Project Scheduled to Begin Construction This Summer

BYRON, Minn. — Construction is expected to commence this summer on the Byron Solar project, a significant $256 million solar farm planned to span over 1,500 acres with a generating capacity of up to 200 megawatts. The project received site approval in 2023 and will primarily be located in Canisteo Township, Dodge County, just southeast of Kasson, Minnesota. The solar farm will connect to the Byron substation, enhancing the region’s renewable energy infrastructure.

According to documents filed with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, the project will be developed in phases, with the initial phase set to build 100 megawatts of capacity.

In a Construction Timing Update submitted by developer EDF Renewables on May 13, 2025, it was noted that Byron Solar has already signed a Generator Interconnection Agreement (GIA) for the first 100 MW of the project, effective November 24, 2021.

Regarding the second 100 MW phase, the update states, "Byron Solar expects an update from Midcontinent Independent System Operators (MISO) in July 2025 regarding the anticipated GIA execution schedule, but that date is subject to change. Byron Solar continues to market the power from the Project to potential offtakers but has not yet secured an agreement."

EDF Renewables is optimistic about the project’s contribution to Minnesota’s clean energy goals and regional economic growth. The solar farm is expected to create local jobs during construction and provide long-term environmental benefits by reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

The phased construction approach allows flexibility in responding to evolving market conditions and regulatory timelines. Once fully operational, Byron Solar will generate enough clean energy to power thousands of homes, contributing significantly to the state’s renewable energy portfolio.

Local officials and community members have expressed support for the project, highlighting its potential to drive sustainable development in Dodge County. The project also aligns with Minnesota’s broader goals to increase renewable energy capacity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

With the first phase breaking ground this summer, all eyes are on EDF Renewables as it navigates the permitting and interconnection processes for the subsequent phase. The company remains committed to working closely with regulators, stakeholders, and potential customers to bring the project to fruition.
