GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich Public Schools last week issued its February update on construction at the new Central Middle School.
The new 125,000 gross square-foot building is being constructed just north of the current school. The existing school will continue to function until the new structure is complete and receives a final certificate of occupancy.

If all goes according to plan, the new $112 million CMS could open before the start of the 2026-2027 school year.
Here’s work that was completed in January:
School officials said the project has maintained steady momentum despite winter conditions, with multiple trades working simultaneously inside the structure.
Here’s a look at work expected to take place in the coming weeks:
The project has received temporary exemptions to the town’s noise ordinance, permitting Saturday morning work. These exemptions are submitted monthly when needed to keep the schedule on track.

The new Central Middle School represents one of the largest municipal building initiatives undertaken in Greenwich in recent years. Designed to replace the aging existing facility, the project aims to deliver modern classrooms, expanded performing arts space, and updated athletic amenities that better reflect current educational needs.
Construction crews have been focusing heavily on interior systems during the winter months, including mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins that must be completed before final finishes can begin. Officials say the substantial completion of interior framing marks a major milestone, allowing painters, ceiling installers and flooring contractors to move in.
Once the new building opens, the current middle school is expected to be demolished, making way for new athletic fields and site improvements. District leaders have emphasized that keeping the existing school operational during construction has been a top priority, requiring careful coordination of deliveries, traffic flow and student safety measures.
Community members can continue to follow progress through monthly updates released by Greenwich Public Schools. Administrators have said they remain optimistic that the building will welcome students ahead of the 2026–27 academic year, provided supply chains and weather remain cooperative.
