A construction worker remains hospitalized after being struck in a violent hit-and-run crash along Interstate 95 in Foxborough early Monday morning — another alarming reminder of the dangers crews face while maintaining the nation’s roads.

According to Massachusetts State Police, the worker was hit just after 2 a.m. on the northbound side of the highway. He was retrieving a sign at the beginning of a detail setup when a vehicle traveling through the work zone collided with him and sped away.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene and immediately began life-saving efforts.

“He was conscious and alert when we got there. He had a significant injury to his right leg, I believe it was, mostly the ankle and the foot. Tourniquet was applied by state police — they did a great job with controlling the bleeding — and then our paramedics transferred him to our stretcher and transported to Boston Medical Center,”

Troopers recovered a passenger-side mirror left behind, which investigators believe came from the fleeing vehicle. That evidence is now a key component in identifying the driver.

State police expressed frustration and urgency around work zone safety — a rising issue nationwide where high-speed traffic and overnight construction frequently intersect.

“The Massachusetts State Police offers the victim and his family our deepest sympathy in the aftermath of this senseless crash. Although he is expected to live, the impact of his injuries illustrates the danger of failing to drive with care in and around work zones,”

MassDOT leadership echoed that sentiment, expressing strong support for the injured worker while committing to assist the investigation.

“We extend our deepest concern to the contractor who was seriously injured while working in Foxborough early this morning. We are keeping them and their family in our thoughts and wish them a full and speedy recovery,”

“MassDOT will continue to work closely with the Massachusetts State Police to support the investigation and ensure every appropriate step is taken.”

Work Zone Safety Under Scrutiny

The crash comes as Massachusetts and states across the U.S. report increasing work zone incidents, especially during nighttime construction when visibility drops and drivers may speed or be impaired.

Federal data shows thousands of work zone injuries each year — many involving hit-and-run drivers who fail to recognize or respect active setups.

Public Help Needed

Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or noticed a vehicle missing a passenger-side mirror to contact the Massachusetts State Police Foxborough Barracks at 508-543-8550.

As the investigation continues, transportation officials and worker advocates warn that this is another painful reminder of the risks roadway crews face simply trying to perform their jobs — and the need for drivers to slow down and stay alert.
