As Michigan continues accelerating its transition toward renewable energy, Consumers Energy has officially launched Muskegon Solar, the utility’s largest solar array to date and a major milestone in the state’s clean energy buildout.

Operations began Monday at the 1,900-acre Muskegon Solar site, located at the Muskegon Resource Recovery Center. Once fully operational, the facility will generate 250 megawatts of electricity, enough to power nearly 40,000 homes and businesses across Michigan.
The project also delivered a boost to the local economy, creating more than 200 construction jobs during development.
“This project is a testament to the skill and dedication of the local men and women building it, and we’re proud to partner with Consumers Energy on such a landmark project for the region,” says Chad Cotter, a vice president in the construction group at Burns & McDonnell.
Muskegon Solar now stands as the largest solar installation in Consumers Energy’s growing renewable portfolio, surpassing the company’s other major projects located at Western Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, and Cadillac.

“Consumers Energy is building the electric grid of the future to serve Michigan homes and businesses. Muskegon Solar provides an example of the reliable, cost-effective projects we’re creating to make sure we continue to meet our customers' needs,” said Sri Maddipati, Consumers Energy’s president of electric supply.
The solar facility features 5,200 rows of panels equipped with tracking technology, allowing them to follow the sun from dawn to dusk to maximize energy production. The design reflects Consumers Energy’s broader push to integrate innovative technologies into its renewable infrastructure.
Beyond solar, the utility continues advancing a diversified energy strategy that includes wind power, natural gas, and battery storage projects across the state, aimed at improving reliability while reducing carbon emissions.
“We are grateful for the support of Moorland Township and Muskegon County, and are excited to produce more energy here in Michigan for our friends and neighbors,” Maddipati said.
With Muskegon Solar now online, Consumers Energy adds significant capacity to Michigan’s renewable grid while reinforcing its long-term commitment to clean energy investment, workforce development, and regional economic growth.
