The aging police building, located at 1300 W. Broward Boulevard, began coming down on Wednesday, marking the first visible phase of a broader redevelopment effort tied to the future of law enforcement operations in the city.
According to Fort Lauderdale officials, demolition work is expected to take two to three months to complete. During that time, residents and businesses in the surrounding area should expect increased truck traffic, heavy equipment activity, and construction-related noise as crews work to clear the site.
City officials emphasized that the demolition phase is a necessary step toward making way for a new police headquarters, which has been in planning stages as the city evaluates long-term public safety infrastructure needs.
Despite the construction activity, officials said police services will remain fully operational throughout the process. Officers and staff have already transitioned out of the former building, ensuring no interruption to emergency response or day-to-day policing while the site is redeveloped.
The demolition represents a significant milestone in Fort Lauderdale’s effort to modernize public facilities and improve working conditions for police personnel, while also preparing the property for future construction tied to city growth and redevelopment goals.
