Downtown Missoula Bus Hub Construction Begins

Caroline Raffetto

MONTANA – Commuters in Missoula should prepare for temporary changes to bus routes and boarding locations as the Downtown Transfer Center on Passenger Island undergoes significant construction work beginning Tuesday. The project will focus on electrical and structural upgrades designed to enhance both safety and functionality of the city’s public transportation hub.

The construction is expected to last approximately two months, with potential delays extending the project beyond July. While improvements are underway, bus service will continue operating on regular schedules, ensuring commuters won’t experience changes in frequency or availability.

However, due to the work at the transfer center, buses will be temporarily relocated to Woody Street, between Pine and Spruce, for passenger boarding and transfers. Signage and staff will be in place to help guide riders to the new temporary location.

Despite the construction zone, the transfer center itself will remain open to the public, allowing access to transit information, customer service, and other amenities.

Riders Advised to Stay Informed During Construction Period

Mountain Line officials are encouraging riders to plan ahead and allow extra time for transfers and wayfinding during the construction period. Information on service changes, reroutes, and construction updates will be provided regularly on the Mountain Line Service website and through customer alerts.

The temporary relocation of buses is aimed at ensuring safety for both passengers and workers as crews complete much-needed upgrades to the facility’s power systems and infrastructure. These improvements are part of a broader effort to modernize Missoula’s public transit services.

For riders, this project represents short-term inconvenience in exchange for long-term gains in system reliability and passenger comfort.
