Granite Secures Two Major Infrastructure Contracts

Caroline Raffetto

Granite Construction has landed two major infrastructure projects worth a combined $226 million, reinforcing its presence in both the aviation and transportation sectors.

The Watsonville, California-based contractor announced on July 7 it was awarded a $115 million construction manager/general contractor (CMGC) contract for San Francisco International Airport’s Runway 1R-19L and Taxiway W. The work is a key part of SFO’s massive $11 billion Capital Improvement Program, which aims to modernize runways, taxiways, and terminals to keep up with rising passenger volumes and enhance operational safety.

Granite’s scope for the runway and taxiway project will include replacing hot mix asphalt pavement, upgrading airfield lighting systems, improving drainage, installing new signage, adding runway status lights, and completing final grooving and striping. As part of the plan, the contractor will demolish Taxiway F1 and build a new Taxiway W. Granite will source about 185,000 tons of asphalt from its Santa Clara facility to complete the project. Work is scheduled to kick off in March 2026 and wrap up by November of the same year.

In a separate win, Granite also announced on July 8 that it secured an $111 million contract from the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) for the Interstate 215 project in Salt Lake City. This large-scale rehabilitation effort will cover three miles of I-215 between State Route 201 and North Temple, plus 12 miles of connecting ramps for SR-201, Interstate 80, and California Avenue. The project also includes structural repairs to 22 bridges.

Key aspects of the I-215 work include rubblizing the existing concrete pavement and installing 175,000 tons of highly modified hot mix asphalt, structural deck replacements, hydro-demolition, pothole patching, and installing 22,000 linear feet of new storm drains. Ramp metering will also be added at California Avenue to improve traffic flow. Granite will supply all asphalt required for the project, including an additional 5,000 tons of temporary hot mix asphalt. Construction is set to begin in August 2025 with completion targeted for November 2026.

Combined, these awards mark a significant boost for Granite’s backlog and underscore its strategy to pursue complex, high-value transportation and aviation projects across the country.
