Governor Kathy Hochul announced a series of 20 community-focused projects across Central New York as part of the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) and NY Forward programs. The projects — selected for their potential to reinvigorate key village centers and enhance economic and social infrastructure — will be funded through a combined investment of nearly $19 million.
A total of nine projects were selected for the villages of Aurora, Cayuga, and Union Springs, recipients of a $10 million DRI award; seven projects were approved for Canastota under a $4.5 million NY Forward award; and four projects were greenlit in Brewerton, also receiving $4.5 million through NY Forward.
“Central New York is at the forefront of the economic resurgence sweeping across our state, and I’m investing in 20 projects that will transform our towns and villages, and strengthen the communities around them,” said Governor Hochul. “When we invest in our communities, we make it easier for families and businesses to do what they do best with the freedom to do it better — that’s why I’m fighting to make our neighborhoods better for generations to come.”
New York Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley added, “When we invest in our downtowns, we’re investing in the heart of our communities. Through the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward program, we’re not just funding projects – we’re fostering vibrant, walkable neighborhoods that spur economic growth, enhance quality of life for residents and preserve the unique character of each municipality and region.”
The $9.7 million in planned developments for this tri-village region focus on waterfront enhancements, housing, public parks, and adaptive reuse of historic properties. Highlights include:
Canastota's selection for NY Forward projects reflects its potential for growth through the reuse of historic canal-era infrastructure and community-oriented spaces.
Among the $4.5 million in projects:
“These investments in Canastota and Brewerton represent more than bricks and mortar,” said State Senator Christopher Ryan. “They’re about building community, honoring heritage, and preparing for the future. In Canastota, we’re breathing new life into our Erie Canal legacy, creating new housing and business opportunities while strengthening our identity as a historic and welcoming village.”
Mayor Rosanne Warner of Canastota added, “We are confident that this investment into our village will spur additional revitalization efforts. On behalf of the residents of Canastota I would like to sincerely thank Governor Hochul, the Department of State, and Empire State Development, for their faith in our projects which hold great promise to be truly transformative.”
As a community adjacent to the site of the forthcoming Micron semiconductor facility, Brewerton is preparing for future residential and commercial growth. NY Forward awards in Brewerton will support:
Town of Hastings Supervisor Tony Bush stated, “This money will help enhance our park and usage, with boats, kayaks and family get together. Our Town can not thank you enough.”
The DRI and NY Forward programs aim to help municipalities turn long-range strategic plans into immediate action. Projects were selected based on their ability to catalyze revitalization and support sustainable economic growth.
Empire State Development CEO Hope Knight said, “These projects will create new opportunities for businesses, support vibrant public spaces, and attract residents and visitors alike – laying the foundation for sustainable growth and stronger regional economies.”
NYS Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas added, “All across this State, the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward programs are strategically prioritizing communities, growing economies with targeted awards, creating more housing opportunities that improve affordability for New Yorkers where it is most needed.”
Aurora Mayor Jim Orman emphasized the importance of these projects in the wake of the Wells College closure. “This DRI award will provide the first tangible step to begin the renaissance of Aurora,” he said.
Union Springs Mayor Robert C. Thurston Jr. described the projects as “destined to generate a significant and lasting impact not only on the village itself but also on the wider region.”
State Senator Rachel May reflected on the regional benefits: “With nearly $10 million allocated through the Downtown Revitalization Initiative, buildings, parks, and waterfronts in Cayuga County will be enhanced, making these spaces more enjoyable and accessible.”
Assemblymember Al Stirpe concluded, “I am proud to support NY Forward’s initiatives in Brewerton, as they revitalize this area’s unique waterfront community with enhanced residential spaces and recreational opportunities for all.”
The Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI), established in 2016, has awarded $900 million to 91 communities across New York State. NY Forward, launched under Governor Hochul’s administration in 2022, builds on that momentum to support revitalization efforts in smaller and rural communities.
Both programs are coordinated through the Department of State in collaboration with Empire State Development, NYSERDA, and Homes and Community Renewal. Selected communities developed Strategic Implementation Plans guided by local planning committees and community input to identify transformative, feasible projects aimed at long-term prosperity.
