The Robert A. Lee Recreation Center Pool in Iowa City is temporarily closed as the city undertakes construction improvements aimed at maintaining the facility’s condition and safety.

City officials confirmed the pool and its locker rooms will be closed to the public from December 15 through January 30 while a flooring project is completed. The work is part of routine facility upgrades designed to address wear in heavily used areas around the pool deck and changing spaces.
The closure impacts lap swimming, recreational swim times, swim lessons, and other aquatic programming normally offered at the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center. City staff said the project timeline was scheduled during the winter months to minimize disruption during peak outdoor swimming seasons.
To ensure continued access to indoor swimming, the Mercer Park Aquatic Center indoor pool will remain open during regular operating hours throughout the construction period. The city is encouraging residents to use Mercer Park as an alternative location while renovations are underway.
Officials noted that hours of operation and pricing for the Mercer Park facility are available on the city’s website, allowing patrons to review schedules, fees, and program availability in advance.
The city did not report any delays related to the construction timeline and expects the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center pool to reopen on schedule at the end of January. Once completed, the upgraded flooring is expected to improve safety, durability, and accessibility for swimmers and visitors.
Residents are advised to monitor the city’s website for updates in case construction timelines or programming adjustments change.
