Jacobs Lands $3.3B LA College Modernization Extension

Caroline Raffetto

LOS ANGELES — Jacobs has secured another major role with the Los Angeles Community College District, winning a five-year extension tied to billions in active construction and modernization projects.

Under the new contract, the Dallas-based firm will continue leading the district’s $15.1 billion BuildLACCD Bond Program, one of the largest higher education construction initiatives in the country. The extension builds on a seven-year partnership between Jacobs and LACCD, which oversees nine colleges across 882 square miles and serves roughly 250,000 students each year.

The current phase of the program includes $3.3 billion in active work across the campuses, according to a Tuesday announcement. Projects span student housing, capital improvements, IT infrastructure and sustainability upgrades across the district.

Since Jacobs began managing the program in 2018, the bond initiative has:

  • Reached substantial completion on nearly 200 projects
  • Launched 475 new construction and modernization efforts
  • Delivered some of the highest annual construction volumes in the district’s history, according to the release

The BuildLACCD program is aimed at overhauling academic and support infrastructure to better serve students, faculty and local communities. The continued partnership reflects confidence in Jacobs’ ability to deliver on large-scale education construction at an accelerated pace.

The company’s growth in education construction comes amid strong performance in other sectors. During Jacobs’ most recent third-quarter earnings call, CEO Bob Pragada pointed to momentum across consulting services and advanced facilities. He said he anticipates similar strength in the fourth quarter, even in the face of broader political and economic uncertainty across the construction market.

With the contract extension in place, Jacobs is now positioned to keep leading the modernization effort deep into the decade — while managing thousands of ongoing and planned improvements across the district’s nine colleges.
